GenAI-mediated language teaching and learning

Applied linguist studying how GenAI is reshaping language teaching and learning, and a longtime fan of Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater, Opeth, and Alice in Chains.
I am Professor of English Education at Chung-Ang University in Seoul, where I have served as Chair of the Department of English Education (2023–2025) and Director of the Digital Education Support Center (2024–2026). My research examines how technology — most recently generative AI — is reshaping second language teaching and learning, alongside long-standing interests in English-medium instruction and instructors' language choices in English classrooms.
Much of my work synthesizes the field's evidence through meta-analysis, with recent articles in Review of Educational Research, Educational Research Review, Applied Linguistics, and Language Learning & Technology. Current projects build and evaluate L2 chatbots, explore no-code approaches that let teachers create their own GenAI tools, and develop GenAI-mediated activity theory as a framework for understanding teachers' changing practice.
I received my D.Phil. in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition from the University of Oxford (supervised by Prof. Ernesto Macaro), and an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from Teachers College, Columbia University. I have been a Visiting Professor at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (2025–2026) and King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (2025), serve on the editorial boards of IRAL and Language Learning & Technology, and was named to the Stanford–Elsevier list of the World's Top 2% Scientists (2025 single-year list, in the Languages & Linguistics field).
Outside my work as an applied linguist, I enjoy listening to progressive metal (Dream Theater, Opeth, Porcupine Tree), melodic death metal (Dark Tranquillity, The Halo Effect, Insomnium), grunge (Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden), and alternative rock (Jimmy Eat World, Incubus, Our Lady Peace). I am also a fan of thriller and horror films, especially psychological thrillers, Japanese horror, and folk horror. Beyond that, my favorite pastimes are drinking coffee, taking walks while listening to music, and napping. I don't drink alcohol, I'm not built for crowds, and I appreciate people who are considerate.
